Underground or “deep” miningconsist mostly of two methods - room-and-pillar andlongwall mining. In room-and-pillar,coal depositsareminedby cutting a network of “rooms” into thecoalseam and leaving behind “pillars” ofcoalto support the roof of themine. Thecoalis extracted in two phases, first with the pillars of untouched material left to support the roof as the open areas “rooms” are recovered.
